Why has the City of Seattle not done more to create a safe consumption space (SCS) in Seattle? How many more deaths do we need before action will come??
I call on Mayor Jenny Durkan, the City of Seattle, King County, and Washington State government to take all necessary steps to fully fund, authorize, and establish an SCS in Seattle.
SCSs have been saving lives around the world for over 30 years. There are now more than 100 sites worldwide. There have been millions of injections at these sites and zero overdose deaths.
These spaces are safe, clean spaces where people can use previously obtained drugs under the supervision of healthcare professionals who provide support, safe and sterile equipment, and overdose prevention. SCSs are a proven and positive solution that reduce deaths and medical issues, restore public safety and community spaces, and connect people who use drugs with resources for treatment.
Last year, the Council dedicated $1.3 million to bring an SCS to Seattle -- yet failed to spend a single dollar to make it happen. Now Mayor Durkan has proposed rolling over that $1.3 million into the 2019 budget, but has stated that this is not enough to cover operating costs. I demand that my representatives fully fund an SCS in Seattle now.
SCSs are a vital part of a comprehensive public health approach to reducing the harms of drug use. We are on track to have at least one overdose death a day in King County this year, for the third year in a row. We must say, enough is enough.
I believe that the lives of people who use drugs matter. I support safe consumption spaces in Seattle, King County, and Washington State.
